Bathroom organisation is one of those things that sounds easy. In reality, it usually turns into opening a drawer, staring at seventeen half-used bottles, and slowly closing it again like the chaos might fix itself.
If you have a small bathroom, it can feel even worse. Space disappears quickly. Storage never feels enough. And somehow, there is always one rogue hairbrush that refuses to have a permanent home.
The good news? You do not need to renovate. There is no need to knock down walls. And you definitely do not need to learn plumbing. You just need a few smart organisation tricks that make your bathroom work harder without looking cluttered.
I’ve made plenty of bathroom organisation mistakes over the years. For example, I once bought matching storage jars for everything. It looked beautiful for exactly two days. Then I realised I had created a Pinterest version of chaos that took twice as long to clean. So trust me when I say simple and practical always wins.
Start by Decluttering (Yes, I Know You’ve Heard This Before)
Before you organise anything, you need less stuff. I know. It is not the fun part. However, it makes everything else easier.
Start by emptying one area at a time. Try a drawer, a shelf, or under the sink. Then ask three simple questions:
- Do I use this regularly?
- Is it expired?
- Do I have three of the same thing?
I always used to keep half-empty toiletries “just in case.” The reality? I never used them. They just took up space and made my bathroom feel cluttered. Once I started being honest about what I actually use, organising became much easier. Personally though, I refuse to waste anything, so I decided all the half used bottles of shampoo and conditioner (and the bottles kindly “gifted” from hotels) had to be used up before I allowed myself to but more. It required a lot of self discipline but saved me a whole drawer and a significant amount of money.Wwin-win!
Also, check expiry dates. Old makeup and skincare products are not worth the drawer space. Or the skin irritation.
Use Vertical Space Like a Pro
Bathrooms often have very little floor space. That means walls are your best friend.
Adding shelves above the toilet or near the sink instantly creates storage without making the room feel crowded. Floating shelves work particularly well because they look light and stylish.
You can also use wall (or door) hooks for towels, dressing gowns, even storage baskets. This keeps things accessible while freeing up cabinets.
I avoided wall storage for years because I thought it would make the room look busy. Ironically, the opposite happened. Once items had a proper place, everything looked calmer. But make sure the proper place makes sense – if you use it everyday then it needs to be at hand otherwise it’ll never be tidy.
Under-the-Sink Storage: The Wild West of Bathrooms
If your under-sink cabinet looks like a mystery box, you are not alone. This area is usually where cleaning products, spare toiletries, and random items go to be forgotten.
The easiest fix is to divide the space using small storage containers or stackable drawers. This prevents items from sliding around and disappearing into the back corner.
Clear containers work especially well because you can see what you have. That means fewer duplicate purchases and less rummaging.
One mistake I always made was storing everything directly on the cabinet floor. It felt organised at first. Then everything slowly merged into one giant clutter pile. Containers completely changed that for me.
Drawer Dividers Are Quiet Life-Changers
Bathroom drawers are sneaky clutter traps. They look tidy when closed, but inside they often resemble a jumble sale.
Drawer dividers create sections for different items. For example:
- Daily skincare
- Makeup essentials
- Dental care products
- Hair accessories
When everything has a specific spot, mornings become faster and less stressful. You stop digging through products like you are searching for buried treasure.
I used to toss everything into drawers because I thought dividers were unnecessary. Then I tried them once. Now I refuse to live without them. They are that good. Believe me!
Keep Everyday Items Within Easy Reach

Not everything needs to be hidden away. In fact, keeping frequently used items visible can make your bathroom more functional.
A small tray on the counter can hold daily essentials like hand soap, moisturiser, or toothbrush holders. The key is keeping it minimal. Too many items quickly turn into clutter.
Grouping products together also makes cleaning easier. You can simply lift the tray instead of moving individual items one by one.
